SAS fiction book series...
This is a soldier's story, from basic training in 1985 to running a marathon, from studying first aid to prison, from boxing to close protection, to the SAS and to hostage rescue, to Mi6 and undercover spy work. It is a very long and progressive story over many books, more than a million words. Follow Wilco as he moves from basic training in the RAF Regiment to the SAS, to SAS counter-terrorist operations in Northern Ireland, to SAS hostage rescues in West Africa and elsewhere, to illegal mission for Mi6 and the CIA.
The book is technically, geographically and historically accurate, weapons and bases are accurate, military and intelligence structures are accurate, units depicted are accurately portrayed, yet this is fiction, and fantasy, and not intended to be an accurate depiction of day to day British or American military life, which is often very dull.
There are currently 18 books in the series, more being added all the time...
NOTE. Books 1 and 2 are larger than the following books, and just $1, to encourage people to start the series. Later books are normal novel size of 80k-100k words. All books follow on and must be read in sequence, it is an on-going story.
If you are ex-military, and part of the whinge-bag group, then this series may not be for you. Day to day military life is very dull, and this story tries to make that life entertaining, fast action, not every meal taken and kit cleaned. And for those who question the lack of mention of Iraq and Afghanistan, this story starts in 1985.

He meets Captain Richards, SAS officer, and becomes enthralled with joining the military for something exciting to do. After finishing high school, he promptly signs up with the RAF - and thus begins the saga of his military career in 1985. Wilco turns into an amazing and non-conventional military asset, volunteering for everything and exceeding at all he tries. He eventually gets attached to the SAS and gets sent on all sorts of dangerous should-not-have-been-survivable missions. I have read other books by Mr Wolak, and found them excellent. This does not disappoint either, full of action, where most of the action is believable. I can strongly recommend the book. I have already bought book 2 and 3 in the series, and enjoyed them as much as this (book 1). I have no doubt I will "binge" read the whole series!!
Good story from the start and continued through the finish. While the story is military based, any member of the military would know that this is fictional, especially from the enlisted point of view.
Love this series!!! I have read all ten and they were all excellent. Would love to see more stories of this excellent character. Mr. Wolak, please continue writing in this series.
Knowing the authors work from other great novels, I suspect this entertaining and well told tale is an introduction to the heroes history. As former military and a 20 year expat, I look forward to further stories featuring Wilco and plan to be entertained from the first page to the last. Having lived in some of the places portrayed in these tales, I can relate to many of the locations and conditions. Thanks for the entertainment!
I've read everything GW has published for years...and have read this newest series up thru book #10. He always has great stories with lots rich characters and descriptions and good storytelling. Some of the book could use a little tighter editing but that's minor nit compared to some of the junk being put forward on these days. Would strongly recommend.
Straight up here. I bought the book on another site and bought this one for the sole purpose of leaving a review. Because it's that good. The reading is a little difficult for an American because while the language is English, it's definetly not American English. But I picked it up quickly and read the first two books over three days. It draws you in. You get involved with characters who are well developed and mostly likeable. The story develops smoothly, and while you would like to believe that real action isn't as plentiful as that in the book, you become afraid that it is. I finished the first two books and immediately ordered the balance of the series. Your adreneline level will be higher during the entire read.
Lone Wolf is the story of a professional soldier with a rebel's dislike for authority, whose difficulties within the system present a series of challenges that temper his character and develop his cynical insight into the factors making the military inefficient and ponderous. He eventually finds his competence rewarded by a special status, in which he has the freedom to do it right as the commander of a special forces platoon. The result s a ripping yarn in which our (anti-)hero, Wilco by name, rescues hostages and kills bad guys all over the third world.
What makes the series remarkable is the accuracy with which military operations are depicted. I don't know whether the author has personal experience serving in the British military, but it does seem so from the sheer detail. In the entire series, the only inaccuracy of note that I've detected is his misunderstanding about the situation in Angola -- it was not Jonas Savimbi's UNITA that was backed by Moscow, but the MPLA. Savimbi's forces were anti-communist and therefore covertly supported by the CIA, who encouraged the South African Defence Force to invade Angola (twice). Alas, the promises made to South Africa by the CIA never materialised -- their aging Mirage fighters were not replaced, and when the MPLA received the assistance of the Cubans with their up-to-date MiG fighters, the South African Air Force no longer dared to venture outside the borders of South Africa. Consequently the SADF, deprived of air cover during the battle of Cuito Cuanavale, had to withdraw in disarray and the MPLA eventually crushed UNITA. (How do I know about the CIA role? It was common knowledge. I was a member of the SADF and recall the talk about the CIA promises that fell through, promises of arms, computers, oil -- all the things that UN sanctions prevented South Africa from purchasing on the open market.)
